Honorary spammer

My Akismet caught 37 spam comments during the last 24 hours. That is perhaps a little less than average these last weeks. Not one of them passed through the filter.

Today’s honorary citation goes to Ukraine. IP 195.225.177.81 posted about 20 of those 37 comments. The same spammer has been detected here for a long time and noted of their frequent contributions.

So now that you know you have been noticed, would you please give up? For your information, it takes me exactly one (1) click to delete all of those spam comments. So why bother?

Also for your information, I do not need a penis enlarger.

Edit: As could be reasonably assumed, I am far from the only blogger that this particular spammer keeps visiting. Michael in Australia has also noticed them.

  1. After I banned the IP address so they will never visit me again using that address. I have also installed SK2 and no longer get offers for penis enlargements, drugs, boob jobs, rolex watches and other items. :-)

  2. Good for you, Michael. ;-) In my case the ban would have to be done by WordPress.com which they may very well consider doing once I get the chance to submit some freedbacking.

  3. [...] As I wrote yesterday, a lot of spam comments, in fact most of them, that Akismet catches are produced by one particular Ukraine placed spammer. A Google search on NetcatHosting, the provider behind IP 195.225.177.81 shows that this IP has a notorious record of spamming. [...]

  4. “deny from 195.225.176.0/22″. I already did it.

Are your comments also of an unusual large size (=unusual large numbe of links)?

  5. João, that is a good idea but it would have to be done by wordpress.com since they are hosting this blog. I would certainly have done exactly what you are suggesting in case I hosted the blog in my own server.

This particular IP seems to send all sorts of bulk junk so a part of those comments are longish while others are more consist. They really range from wall to wall.

  6. Yes,you’re right. Either way, Akismet must be catching them all, right? At least it has been doing so in my self-hosted WordPress blog. :-)

  7. Yes, Akismet is doing a great job. I would be ruined without it. It is just the amount of those comments that makes me frustrated. It is up to 50-100 a day by now and most of them from that one and same IP. The comments are automatically deleted after 15 days but you just can not wait that long, it must be bad for the server performance.

Also, every now and then (not very often but occasionally) a legitimate comment gets accidentally caught so you have to look through the junk anyway. That would be so much easier without that bastard in Ukraine.
