Twitter following limit
Sunday, March 8, 2009 at 20:33 | Posted in absurd, web 2.0. | Leave a commentTags: twitter
I just filed a support request ticket to my Twitter account. It is quite self explanatory:
How come am I supposed to have hit a following limit? Was not everybody supposed to be allowed to follow 2000 accounts? I am currently following only 90 accounts but I receive a following limit error message when trying to follow the 91st account.
Looking forward to hear from @twitter. And for those whom I am not following I can just say that it may not be because I would not like to. Hope to get this sorted out ASAP.
Edit: 56 hours later the problem seems to be partly fixed. I added this to the support request:
As it looks now, this problem seems to be connected to specific user accounts. I am able to add some accounts to be followed while others return this error:
You are unable to follow more people. Please read about our following limits.
I am currently following 92 accounts which is obviously much less than 2000.
The support ticket is still waiting assignment to a help desk operator.
Come teach us Hillary!

It may not be such a big deal that Hillary Clinton accidentally referred to EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana as “High Representative Solano”. And we should probably not pay much attention to the mishap of calling European Commission External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner “Benito”, as in Benito Mussolini. These things just happen, no fuzz about it.
Secretary Clinton is absolutely right to point out that the American democracy has “been around a lot longer than European democracy“. After all, democracy has only been “around”, as it were, in Europe for about 2500 years. Even a child would understand that 2500 years is much less than the 233 years of democracy in America.
Clinton also had some fresh and interesting views about the ideal number of political parties in a democratic society:
I have never understood multiparty democracy. It is hard enough with two parties to come to any resolution
I bet she would prefer just one party. Then again, that model has been tried in parts of Europe with not so good results.
Hillary Clinton did indeed speak words of wisdom in Brussels. The European climate must have a stimulating effect on her brain. All of us remember her earlier experience in Bosnia where she landed under sniper fire.

Random album cover
Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at 22:08 | Posted in internet | 2 Comments
Just because I had nothing more important to do (or did not want to do it) I composed this random album cover.
This is how to make up one:
- Get a random Wikipedia article. The article headline is your band name.
- Pick a random quote. The last four or five words will become your album title
- Take a random image and make sure it is not copyrighted.
- Mix all of above in your favourite photo manipulation software.
I used this image under Creative Commons. You are welcome to use the album cover with same conditions.
How much is a liter of water?
Monday, March 2, 2009 at 20:14 | Posted in Environment | 2 CommentsTags: water
I happened to see Beer Activist’s post yesterday about the amount of water needed to produce one liter of beer resp. one liter of coffee. What I read and also tweeted about was that the amount of water needed for a liter of beer would be 30 liters. As I just learned, thanks to a comment at Beer Activist’s blog, is that there was a minor typo: the correct amount is 300 liters.
However, that is not the point here. As it turns out, producing one liter of coffee requires the amazing amount of 1120 liters of water. The numbers come from an article in the Economist.
I do not mind having a cup of coffee or two in the morning but the amount of water wasted on coffee gives me a perfect excuse to substitute some of my coffee with beer. So there is no point in telling me in the afternoon that I might be on a bit too jolly mood. I only drank the afternoon beer(s) in order to protect Mother Earth. Drinking beer is good for the environment.
As if it was not hard to get the figures right with beer and coffee, Sanczny was kind enough to put me a guestion in Twitter:
@unclelarko How much water does it take to produce a liter of water?
I had no idea at that moment. I was also busy with live blogging about #spectrial. Which is why I made the next best thing and promised to come back to the subject later. Which is what I am trying to do now.
To be quite honest, I still do not have an idea. If I tapped a liter of water from a natural well, I suppose it would require about one liter of water to produce one liter of water. But since the 300 resp 1120 liters required for beer and coffee also include upstream input and I happen to live in an urban suburb where the last natural well was polluted and subsequently destroyed for 40 years ago (yes, I do remember fetching water from it) there must be quite a bit of upstream input to get the water run to my kitchen tap.
But how much could it be? As I said, I have no competence to figure it out. Any suggestions?
Avoid getting arrested in Seattle
Sunday, March 1, 2009 at 10:07 | Posted in USA | Leave a commentYou may be sleepless in Seattle but Seattle is definitely not a good place to get arrested in. Getting arrested is not a pleasure anywhere but in Seattle it may cause you a serious headache.
