As I wrote yesterday, New York mayor Michael Bloomberg was justifying the use of guns against members of a bachelor party on Saturday morning. Sean Bell was shot dead by the police only hours before he was supposed to be married. The mayor then said according to the BBC:
Officers on the scene had reason to believe that an altercation involving a firearm was about to happen and were trying to stop it.
It looks now like the mayor had changed his mind. The New York Times writes that Bloomberg described the incident as “unacceptable,” “inexplicable” and “deeply disturbing” in a press conference after a meeting he had with elected politicians and community leaders from the area where the victims lived. The mayor actually used the word “victim”.
Bishop Lester Williams was supposed to administer the wedding ceremony that would never take place. He comments the situation in New York with an interesting comparison:
“It’s little Iraq, I’m sorry, especially toward the blacks in the community,” he said before attending the meeting. “We don’t feel protected.”
The former president of Iraq will probably soon be hung. Err, president George W Bush arrived in Tallinn less than an hour ago. If he behaves himself, he may be eligible for an asylum in Estonia. Sooner or later somebody must get the bright idea of prosecuting him in Germany anyway.
