Calling him Steve

As I noted in July, the Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper had nothing against George W Bush calling him Steve, although even his mother does not do that. Back then, the CBC quoted Mr. Harper as saying:

If a guy buys 85 per cent of our exports, and wants to call me Steve, that’s OK with me.

As the former liberal prime minister Jean Chrétien was addressing the liberal convention in Montreal this weekend, he also launched a message to Mr. Harper:

“Stephen, can I call you Steve, like George W.?” he said, garnering a large laugh from the audience of 5,000 Liberal delegates.

“Do not adjust your sets,” Chrétien said following the rapturous applause. “What you see is what you get.”

Mr. Chrétien does not buy 85 % of the Canadian exports but maybe his accomplishments as the prime minister – both in good and bad – were that much more than Mr. Harper’s so far that he may call him Steve.
