Abdullah lets rape victim off the hookMonday, December 17, 2007 at 14:39 | Posted in Human rights, saudi arabia | Leave a comment
Al Jazeera writes that king Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has granted a royal pardon to the 19 year old rape victim that I wrote about last month. The young lady, known as the “Qatif girl” was sentenced to 200 lashes and six months in jail for being alone with an unrelated man. Both of them were victims of a gang bang rape by seven bandits.
Saudi justice minister Mohammed al-Sheik told al Jazeera:
The king always looks into alleviating the suffering of the citizens when he becomes sure that these verdicts will leave psychological effects on the convicted people, though he is convinced and sure that the verdicts were fair.
Which makes it look like the king did the right thing for the wrong reason. I am pretty sure the girl would have had no chance without the numerous international protests against this barbarian verdict. While the outcome is, of course, good for the young lady, human rights still remain absent from Saudi Arabia.
