Making faces

I detected this on line photo editor (thanks, Elviina) and I just had to try it with my own face. Would be nice if I could do that in live mode.

vozMe converts text to mp3

Saturday, January 26, 2008 at 16:58 | Posted in gadgets, Web tools | Leave a comment

Kristjan in Tallinn pointed me to vozMe.com which is a tool for converting plain text into mp3 format. The supported languages are Spanish, Italian and English.

At least the English sounds pretty decent considering it is spoken by a robot. But do not take my word for it: click here and listen yourself.

Hypocritical rating

online dating

Baltimore Dating

I found this so called rating tool in Kristjan’s post.

What can I say about the outcome? I do not target my blog to children. I assume that readers are adult although I rarely or never specifically post what could be regarded as adult material. That said, I use liberal language whenever I feel like it. I can write “fuck” if it happens to fit the context of my post.

What makes this rating interesting is the motivation provided. The robot scanned the word “rape” on three occasions, “hell” on two and “punch” on one occasion. So they flag me without checking the context where those words appear. And I do not happen to regard those words as such that their appearance in a blog would require parental guidance.

My conclusion is that the rating is based on hypocrisy. Cultural differences may also play a part. I acknowledge that many words and expressions can be heard in radio and TV here that would be beeped away in most English speaking countries.

Video posting button and other Vodpod goodies

Saturday, September 8, 2007 at 6:05 | Posted in Blogosphere, gadgets, internet, linux, ubuntu, video, Web tools, WordPress | 4 Comments

On The Air TV reminds me of what I discovered yesterday about Vodpod’s video posting button which can be installed as a Firefox extension and used for posting in WordPress blogs. The button as such is cool and works perfectly. I tested it to make a post in my Finnish blog. It has hitherto only been possible to post videos hosted by YouTube, Google or Dailymotion in WordPress.com but this button practically opens all borders.

However, I have not been able to discover a way to install this gadget to Firefox under Linux Ubuntu. I am sure somebody will soon enough invent a way to do it if it does not exist already. I am now able to use the button only in my Windows partition which is not bad when I work with my own footage. There are several reasons for me to work with my videos under Windows. But if I detect a clip while doing my regular work under Ubuntu, it would have to be damned good if I wanted to re-boot.

Fortunately, though, I am not totally dependent on that button. I registered to Vodpod and soon enough detected that I can collect footage from just about anywhere, both my own and that of others, and store it at Vodpod. And even more importantly, I was able to store the URL’s of my blogs in WordPress.com, my user ID and password to make automated posts from the Vodpod interface to my blogs.

This means that I do not necessarily have to re-boot to Windows as I can post footage hosted anywhere to my WordPress blogs regardless of the button. So I just need to log in to my Vodpod account to collect a clip hosted, let us say by On The Air TV, and post it right here. And it appears here as a clip hosted by On The Air TV.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is cool.

Edit: I was able to install the button after upgrading to Ubuntu 7.10.

My fresh posts in a feed

Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at 16:52 | Posted in Blogosphere, gadgets, google, My other blogs, rss feeds, Web tools | Leave a comment

I have occasionally received feedback saying that I have too many blogs. It would be easier to keep track of my posts if they were all at one place. I plead quilty as charged but I am not going to put all my posts in one blog because everybody might not appreciate  a multi lingual blog.

However, to meet the request of being easier to track, my blog templates now show links to my 10 latest posts in all of my personal blogs. Excluded are collective blogs that I either edit or contribute to. Links to those are in the sidebars.

The technical solution is very simple. I just subscribed to the feeds of my own blogs and put them into a separate folder in Google Reader. The folder produces a feed of its own which is distributed as links in the sidebar. The feed may be subscribed to here.

The chronology of the posts may be a bit limping  at start since Google Reader does not always manage to sort posts in fresh subscriptions correctly. This is going to sort out by itself, though, as fresh posts appear.

It is not what it looks like

No, ladies, this is not what it looks like. Not a toy for your personal pleasure. It is an electric cork screw!

Never believed they would invent such a useless gadget.

I am not a friend of game gadgets so I would not have an opinion about which of these two devises to have, PS3 or Wii. But if I absolutely had to make a choice between those two girls in the ad, I guess I would be inclined to the intellect. I would soon get bored with the sweet one. ūüôā

Bloglines subscription for Firefox

Wednesday, October 25, 2006 at 4:18 | Posted in browsers, firefox, gadgets, internet, rss feeds, Web tools | Leave a comment

As could be expected, Bloglines annouces that their one click subscription tool for any RSS feed in your browser also works with Firefox 2.0.

I have a hunch that this feature is going to be much more appriciated among the Firefox users than the similar gadget for those perverts who prefer IE 7.
