If you have 8 minutes and 27 seconds to waist and you want to spend it doing something completely useless, you may want to watch this video: Keynote – Bill Gates’ Last Day – January 6, 2008. You will learn nothing of importance and there is not a single entertainig element in it.

I guess every opsys has been something of a news at the time it was released. This Dos 5 Promo Video makes us laugh now but it was no doubt the news of the day back then. You kids just do not imagine what primitive tools we had to rely on.

Since there is a chance I may have to use a computer with Windows and other Microsoft stuff at work some time after the Easter holidays, I feel like sharing this e-mail joke I received today:

A helicopter was flying around above Seattle when an electrical malfunction disabled all of the aircraft’s electronic navigation and communication equipment. Due to the clouds and haze the pilot could not determine his position or course to steer to the airport. The pilot saw a tall building, flew toward it, circled, drew a handwritten sign and held it in the helicopter’s window.

The sign said “WHERE AM I”? in large letters.

People in the tall building quickly responded to the aircraft, drew a large sign an held it in a building window. The sign said, “YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER”.

The pilot smiled, waved, looked at his map and determined the course to steer to Seattle/Tacoma airport and landed safely.

After they were on the ground, the co-pilot asked the pilot how the “YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER” sign helped determine their position. The pilot responded, ” I knew that had to be the Microsoft building because they gave me a technically correct but completely useless answer”.

Let us hope, though, that I am going to be able to convince the people who need to be convinced that switching to Ubuntu is a good idea.

Microsoft fined by EU Comission

BBC writes that Microsoft has been fined 280.5 million € by the EU Comission “for failing to comply with an anti-competition ruling”. EU ruled in 2004 that Microsoft must provide its rivals with information about Windows opsys to enable them to write software that would run smoothly under Windows.

EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes says:

I regret that, more than two years after the decision… Microsoft has still not put an end to its illegal conduct.

Windows is a major example of a closed system which tends to exclude rival software. Every Windows user must be familiar with “illegal function” error messages that are frequently received from the opsys because a software is just doing what it is supposed to do. But I still doubt if this fine will produce an operating system and applications that run without those irritating error messages.

Edit: AFP reports that Microsoft are going to continue their appeals to the European Court, according to general counsel Brad Smith:

We will ask the European courts to determine whether our compliance efforts have been sufficient and whether the commissions unprecedented fine is justified.
